Compressor Spare

A compressor spare is the main replacement unit when an air-conditioner loses compression, stops cooling properly, or trips on start-up. Aircon Depot supplies and fits selected compressor spares across Clairwood, Durban and greater eThekwini for home and commercial systems.

Compressor Spare

What a compressor spare does in an air-conditioner

The compressor is the part that moves refrigerant through the system and creates the pressure needed for cooling. When it fails, the unit may run with warm air, short cycle, trip the breaker, or make a hard starting noise before cutting out. In many cases the rest of the system can still be saved if the fault is picked up early and the correct replacement is fitted.

We supply compressor spares for selected split systems, multi-split units, cassette units and light commercial equipment where the indoor and outdoor components are still in serviceable condition. This is usually the practical choice when the unit is otherwise sound, the casing is not badly corroded, and the repair cost still makes sense against full replacement. On coastal jobs in Durban, the main issue is often salt air and poor maintenance, so the new compressor must be matched properly and the system must be cleaned and pressure tested before re-gassing.

Sizes and options we match to your system

Compressor spares are not one-size-fits-all. The correct unit has to match the refrigerant type, voltage, phase, capacity range and pipe connections on the existing system. We check the model details and the site conditions before recommending a replacement, because an incorrect match can give poor cooling, high amps, or repeated breakdowns. In Durban's heat and humidity, that usually shows up fast.

  • Capacity ranges for small domestic units through to larger light commercial systems
  • Single phase and three phase options, depending on the site supply
  • Fixed speed and selected inverter-compatible replacements where suitable
  • Common refrigerant types including older and current systems, subject to availability
  • Compressor body sizes and mounting styles to match existing brackets and pipework

We also check whether the failed compressor has damaged the rest of the circuit. Burnt windings, acid contamination, blocked capillaries and worn contactors can all cause repeat failure if they are left out of the repair. That is why a proper diagnosis matters before any compressor spare is ordered.

Where a replacement compressor suits best

A compressor spare suits systems that are worth repairing and still have a good indoor coil, outdoor fan motor, controls and casing. It is common on offices, shops, restaurants, flats, homes and smaller industrial spaces where a complete change-out would cost more than the site needs. For landlords and body corporates, a compressor replacement can keep tenants comfortable without major alteration to the building.

This option is especially useful where the installation is in place, the pipe run is already correct, and the original unit was sized properly for the room. If the room has been altered, or the load has changed because of new equipment or added glass, we will say so. Sometimes the real issue is not the compressor but poor ventilation, blocked filters or a drain blockage that made the system work too hard for too long.

  • Domestic bedrooms, living rooms and home offices
  • Retail shops, salons and consulting rooms
  • Boardrooms, server rooms and small offices
  • Restaurants, kitchens and back-of-house areas with moderate cooling needs
  • Warehouses and work spaces where the original unit is still practical to repair

Installation, power supply and gas checks

Fitting a compressor spare is not a simple swap. The system must be isolated, recovered and opened safely. We check the electrical supply, starting components, refrigerant circuit, pipe cleanliness and oil condition before commissioning the replacement. If the old compressor failed because of low gas, a leak, or dirty coils, that fault needs to be corrected first or the new unit can fail again.

On installation day we confirm the voltage, phase and protection on site, then match the compressor to the available power supply. We also check the refrigerant charge by weight and operating pressures once the system is back together. In some older systems, the correct gas has to be confirmed from the nameplate and site history, because mixed refrigerants or guessed top-ups cause trouble. If the unit is on a generator, solar changeover, or a weak municipal supply point, we will factor that into the advice before fitment.

  • Electrical isolation and safe recovery of refrigerant
  • Vacuum testing and leak checking before charging
  • Replacement of driers, contactors or capacitors where needed
  • Final running current and temperature checks after start-up

Care and servicing after the compressor is fitted

A new compressor needs clean air flow and regular maintenance to last. The outdoor coil should be kept free of dust, leaves and salt build-up, especially in coastal areas like Clairwood, South Durban and the wider Durban basin. If the unit is left to run with blocked filters or a clogged drain, the compressor works harder and power use climbs. That is a costly habit during load-shedding periods too, when units start and stop more often than normal.

We recommend planned maintenance at least twice a year for busy sites, and once a year for smaller domestic systems. During service we look at coil condition, electrical terminals, drain flow, fan operation and refrigerant pressure. If there are signs of over-amping, oil staining, repeated tripping or ice formation, it is better to catch them early rather than wait for another failure. Simple care extends the life of the full system, not just the new part.

What to check before you order a compressor spare

To supply the right compressor spare, we need accurate details from the old unit or the installation. The more complete the information, the quicker we can match the part and avoid delays. If the old compressor has already failed, take clear photos of the nameplate on the indoor and outdoor units, plus any wiring or pipe labels that are still readable.

  • Unit make and model number
  • Refrigerant type listed on the nameplate
  • Supply voltage and whether it is single phase or three phase
  • Approximate cooling size or BTU rating
  • Pipe size and connection layout
  • Any history of leak repairs, gas top-ups or past compressor work

If you are unsure, we can assist with fault finding first. A compressor is a major part and it should not be ordered on guesswork. The wrong match can waste time, money and sometimes damage the board, contactor or capacitor. Send the details through and we will tell you if the repair is worth doing or if another option makes better sense for the site.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

How do I know if the compressor has failed?

Common signs are no cooling, tripping on start-up, loud starting noise, very hot outdoor piping, or the unit running but not shifting heat. A proper fault finding check confirms whether the compressor is the real problem.

Can a compressor be replaced on an older unit?

Yes, if the rest of the system is still in good condition and the correct part is available. We first check for leaks, burnt wiring, blocked airflow and contamination before recommending the repair.

Do you need the gas type before ordering?

Yes. The refrigerant type must match the system and the replacement process. We also confirm the electrical supply, capacity and pipe connections so the compressor spare fits and runs properly.
