Our history

Aircon Depot started in Clairwood in 2008 with a clear purpose: supply, install and repair air-conditioning for homes and businesses across Durban. What began as a local trade business grew through steady work, word of mouth and practical service that suited coastal conditions, load-shedding and busy commercial sites.

Our history

2008: the Clairwood start that set the tone

Aircon Depot began in 2008 at Archary Rd, Clairwood, Durban, serving nearby homes, shops and light commercial sites that needed honest advice and quick turnaround. The early work was hands-on from day one, with a focus on domestic split units, small office systems and the kind of repairs that could not wait until next week.

From the start, the business was built around practical service. In Durban, humidity, salt air and summer heat are part of daily life, so installations had to be done properly and repairs had to last. That meant careful sizing, neat pipe work, correct drainage and an eye for the details that save clients money over time.

The original years also shaped the way the team dealt with customers. Straight answers, fair pricing and punctual call-outs became part of the business standard. It was never about selling the biggest system, it was about getting the right one in the right place and making sure it worked as it should.

Growing through Durban job by job

As the business grew, more clients came through recommendation from neighbours, landlords, building managers and business owners who needed reliable support. The work expanded from Clairwood into Durban Central, South Durban and surrounding suburbs as the team handled installs, breakdowns and ongoing maintenance for different property types.

That growth happened in a careful way. Rather than chasing volume, Aircon Depot kept building a reputation on response times and technical skill. The team learnt which systems suited coastal homes, which setups handled shop floors better, and how to work around tenant schedules, municipal building access and busy trading hours.

  • More residential work in flats, duplexes and freestanding homes
  • More commercial call-outs for offices, retail spaces and workshops
  • Regular maintenance work for landlords and property managers
  • Better stock planning for parts, gas and common replacements

By keeping the focus local, the business could stay close to its clients and understand what they needed before a problem became a bigger cost.

Building a team with clear responsibility

A business only lasts when the people in it know their roles and take pride in doing them well. Over the years, Aircon Depot built a team led by Kavitha Naidoo as Managing Director, with Anele Mkhize overseeing operations and Yusuf Ismail leading technical work on complex repairs and fault finding.

Nokuthula Zungu helped keep installations organised and on schedule, which matters when multiple sites need attention on the same day. Ridwaan Khan took charge of spares and gas, making sure the right parts were available when compressors, motors, capacitors or contactors had to be replaced. Kgaogelo Mashaba handles customer care, following up on bookings and keeping communication clear.

That structure means the business can deal with breakdowns, planned maintenance and supply needs without losing time between departments. It is a simple idea, but it makes a big difference when an office is down, a cold room is struggling or a family is waiting for a repair before the heat builds up.

Milestones that shaped the business year by year

Aircon Depot’s history is made up of practical milestones rather than empty claims. Each year added more experience, better systems and a wider local footprint across eThekwini.

  • 2008 - The business starts in Clairwood with domestic installation and repair work.
  • 2011 - More commercial clients come on board, including offices and small retail spaces.
  • 2014 - The team expands its repair capability for compressors, motors and control faults.
  • 2017 - Planned maintenance becomes a bigger part of the work as clients ask for regular service contracts.
  • 2020 - Load-shedding increases demand for systems that can recover quickly after power interruptions.
  • 2023 - Spares and gas support becomes a stronger part of the offering, helping reduce downtime.
  • Today - The business serves homes and commercial sites across greater eThekwini from its Clairwood base.

These milestones show a business that has kept adapting without losing its original purpose. The work changed with the market, but the standard stayed the same.

What local conditions taught us over time

Working in Durban teaches you quickly that air-conditioning is not only about cooling. Coastal humidity can affect coils, drainage and electrical components. Dust, cooking grease, tenant misuse and power fluctuations can all create avoidable faults if the system is not maintained properly.

Over time, Aircon Depot developed service practices that suit the local climate and property mix. Deep cleaning is used where airflow is restricted. Leak checks and regassing are done carefully when gas loss points to a bigger problem. Drain blockages are cleared before they cause ceiling damage or mould. Where needed, the team repairs controls, fan motors and contactors instead of pushing for replacement too early.

  • Fault finding for systems that switch off, trip or cool poorly
  • Compressor replacement when a unit has reached the end of its working life
  • Planned maintenance to reduce surprise breakdowns in peak season
  • Breakdown call-outs for urgent residential and commercial faults

This approach has helped the business earn repeat work from clients who need dependable support through summer heat, heavy rain and load-shedding.

Today, still based in Clairwood and still hands-on

Today Aircon Depot remains based in Clairwood, Durban, with service reach across Durban Central, South Durban, North Durban, West Durban and the wider eThekwini area. The business continues to supply, install and repair domestic and commercial air-conditioning, while also supporting customers with spares and gas.

What has not changed is the way the team works. Jobs are assessed properly, customers are told what needs attention, and the aim is to get systems running correctly with the least disruption possible. For some clients that means a small repair. For others it means a full installation, scheduled maintenance or a same-day call-out. Either way, the work is treated with the same attention to detail.

From the original years on this domain to today, the story of Aircon Depot is one of steady local service, practical growth and long-term relationships. It is still the same kind of business it set out to be in 2008, only with more experience and a stronger team behind it.
