Motor Capacitor

A motor capacitor is a small electrical spare that gives a fan or compressor the start and run support it needs. At Aircon Depot in Clairwood, Durban we supply, fit and test capacitors for domestic and commercial air-conditioning.

Motor Capacitor

What a motor capacitor does in an aircon system

A motor capacitor stores and releases electrical energy to help a motor start and keep turning at the right speed. In air-conditioning it is commonly used on the indoor fan motor, outdoor fan motor, or compressor circuit depending on the unit design. When the capacitor weakens the system may hum, struggle to start, trip the breaker, or run with poor airflow and higher power use.

In Durban homes and shops we often see a failed capacitor after long summer running, voltage dips during load-shedding, or heat and humidity inside coastal installations. It is a small part, but if it is out of spec the whole unit can act up. That is why we keep selected sizes ready for fan and compressor repairs, fault finding and breakdown call-outs across Clairwood, Durban Central and the wider South Durban area.

  • Helps motor start under load
  • Supports stable running on selected units
  • Often checked before replacing a full motor
  • May be the cause of tripping, humming or slow starts

Capacitor sizes and common options we stock

Motor capacitors are chosen by capacitance value, voltage rating and physical size. The most common aircon values are measured in microfarads, written as uF, and the replacement must match the required range on the unit or motor plate. We keep selected options for residential split systems, light commercial units, and larger compressors where the capacitor is separate from the control board.

Typical stock includes start and run capacitors in common values, with round or oval bodies depending on the application. Some units use one capacitor for the outdoor fan and another for the compressor. Others combine functions on a board, which means the fault may be in the control side not the capacitor itself. We test first, then supply the right spare, because a wrong value can shorten motor life or leave the system under-powered.

  • Common capacitance values supplied in selected ranges
  • Rated voltage matched to the motor requirement
  • Round and oval body styles available on request
  • Suitable for fan motors, compressors and certain replacement kits

Where a motor capacitor suits best in Durban conditions

This spare suits split units, cassette units, ducted systems and packaged equipment where a motor uses an external capacitor. It is useful in homes, offices, shops, takeaways, light industrial spaces and rental properties where a quick repair is needed to get cooling back on line. In coastal Durban, salty air and moisture can affect electrical parts over time so the right replacement matters. If the cabinet has been opened often or the unit sits near the coast, the terminals and wiring should be checked too.

We also see capacitor faults in buildings where power is unstable or the aircon has been pushed hard through the hot season. A weak capacitor can make a compressor start late or cause the outdoor fan to stall, which then affects head pressure and cooling. In some cases the unit may cool for a few minutes then cut out again. That is a sign to test the electrical side before deeper gas work or major part replacement.

  • Commercial indoor and outdoor units
  • Units in coastal or humid areas
  • Equipment that has intermittent starting issues

Installation, testing and power checks before fitment

Capacitor replacement should be done with the power isolated and the correct discharge procedure followed. Our technicians check the wiring, compare the old part to the required rating, and confirm that the motor itself is not drawing excess current. If the capacitor failed because the motor is binding, the bearings are worn, or the compressor is damaged, fitting a new part alone will not hold.

We also look at supply voltage, contactor condition, terminal heat marks and any signs of water entry. On some units a failing capacitor can be linked to a loose connection or a control fault, so a proper test saves time and repeat breakdowns. If gas pressure is also out, the system may overwork and pull harder on the motor. In that case we can combine the electrical check with a regas and leak check so the repair is handled properly.

For business premises in Durban Central, South Durban and North Durban we can schedule repairs around opening hours where possible. For homes and rental units in Clairwood and nearby suburbs, we often do same-day breakdown call-outs if the spare is on hand.

Care and servicing to help the capacitor last longer

A capacitor itself is not normally serviced in the way filters or coils are cleaned, but the surrounding system does need attention. Heat, dust and poor ventilation shorten its working life. If the outdoor unit is packed against a wall, full of lint, or running with blocked airflow, the motor works harder and the capacitor is placed under more stress. Regular deep clean service can reduce that load and help with reliability.

Planned maintenance is useful for shops, offices and body corporates that want fewer breakdowns in peak summer. During service we check the electrical compartment, tighten terminations where needed, and look for any swelling, oil marks or bulging on the capacitor casing. Once a capacitor starts showing those signs, replacement is usually due. It is cheaper to swap the part before it fails completely than after a hot room or spoiled stock complaint.

  • Keep the condenser coil clean and clear of dust
  • Make sure the outdoor unit has free air around it
  • Check for water ingress after heavy rain
  • Ask for service before peak summer use

What to check when ordering a replacement capacitor

When ordering, bring the old capacitor or a clear photo of the label if possible. The main details are the microfarad rating, voltage rating, shape, terminal layout and physical size. If the unit has two capacitors or a dual rating, both values must be matched correctly. A part that is too small can fail early, while one that is too far off spec may stop the motor from starting at all.

It also helps to know the aircon make and model, the motor type, and whether the fault is on the fan side or compressor side. If the old part has faded markings our team can test and identify it at the counter in Clairwood, or during a site call in greater eThekwini. We stock selected spares for domestic and commercial work, and if the issue is not the capacitor we can move straight into fault finding, compressor replacement, controls repair or breakdown call-out support.

  • Microfarad value marked on the body
  • Voltage rating such as 370V or 440V
  • Round, oval or dual capacitor style
  • Motor or compressor application
  • Unit make, model and serial if available

What clients say

Questions we get asked

How do I know if the capacitor has failed?

Common signs are humming, slow starting, repeated tripping, weak airflow or a compressor that tries to start then cuts out. A proper test confirms it.

Can I replace a capacitor with any similar size?

No. The uF value, voltage rating and type must match the equipment requirements. Using the wrong one can damage the motor or leave the unit underpowered.

Do you supply and fit capacitors on site?

Yes. We supply selected capacitors and can fit them during a service visit or breakdown call-out, subject to stock and the fault found on site.
